I use a hand-crank charger to charge a battery pack. Neither my phone or my mp3 player like the inconsistent power provided from the hand-crank, but the battery pack could care less. Once during power outage I used one battery pack to top off another battery pack and then recharged the dead battery pack while recharged pack charged phone. I don’t want to wreck $200 phone to see if $10 charger will work.
And so youre going to crank it for an hour straight to charge that phone? And no it wont break your phone as long as its the correct voltage and amperage. “Its physics electricity isnt all the same”? Dude go back to school!

YES IT DOES. so if its charging its because there’s some diode in the phone. turning it into DC. i wouldn’t rely on that to work for long. make a rectifying circuit and then hook the phone into that.

You can pick these things up a similar (more convenient) item on eBay for a couple of squids. This seems like a fun little project to pass a bit of time though. I was planning on working something similar from a dynamo connected to a bike wheel.
If anyone’s interested in the item I mentioned, you can find it using search terms such as “usb dynamo” or “wind up charger”.
Damn I had a flashlight that had a magnet that you skook back and forth…but it broke a long time ago. But Ben Heck reminds me of…ME!
Bre Pettis made a charger using magnets mounted on a bicycle rim with leads attached on the frame to charge USB devices while riding the bike. I think one of those bicycle exercise foot machines or even a stationary olds school exercise bike would not only be a good way to charge the phone, you could maybe even write some software to the phone scores your virtual bike ride for calories burned, etc, while charging it at the same time. Interesting idea.
